Red Lines for Syria and Hypocrisy in the Case of Gaza

Written by Aaron Peterson

United States Secretary of State John Kerry famously is remembered for his harsh rhetoric of red lines in Syria against the use of chemical weapons against the civilian population in rebel held areas. Not only, just against the use of chemical weapons, but the apparent use of an extreme amount of force in terms of aerial assault. At the same time, when Israel has now according to sources used a new toxic gas in “Operation Protective Edge”, there has been no outcry or condemnation from the White House. Instead, the White House has chosen to stay quiet on the use of chemical weapons in Gaza. Strangely, just as was done in 2008 during Cast Lead when white phosphorus, which is illegally banned by UN convention to be used on the civilian population was used directly on the population.

On the first day of the escalation by Benjamin Netanyahu’s assault on Gaza as a propaganda coup in order to show the world an offensive position that it will not recognize or otherwise allow Palestinians unity or self-determination scores were injured or killed. The white gas smoke which had been unseen in Gaza had followed it, with locals describing it as a “strange toxic gas”. Dozens were hospitalized suffering from suffocation after the inhalation of the white poisonous gas fired by the IDF in the northern Gaza Strip and in Rafah. A sense of calm has been urged for the local population. But the international community needs to be firm in asking as to why Israel is being allowed to cross the lines into direct collective punishment even further.

Secretary of State Kerry responded with condemnation for even the slightest of apparent violations by Syria’s Bashar al-Assad, along with his predecessor’s use of NATO force over Muammar al-Gadaffi’s alleged human rights violations. Now as the clock has ticked again and another number has been reached, the clock in this metaphor referring to the legacy of Israeli aggression against Gaza and the ticking meaning a new escalation, there has been no attempt to restrain the Israeli government, oppose it’s illegalities or continued settlement policy in order to resolve the conflict. The use of a new strange toxic gas is just the beginning of an extremely gruesome one sided massacre in the Gaza Strip, now on the ground, that has accumulated in thus far 249 killed and the wounding of 1860. The first victim of today’s ground operation was Fares Al-Tarabeen, a three month year old baby.
