Great Expectations

instilled from birth in us are expectations

Expectations for the future,

great expectations of education, wealth and success

Shoveled down our throats by society,

teachers, professors and family

Fall within the cracks,

“failure”, a label used to brand those who did not meet such rigorous expectations

Looked down on as menial,

a shell of a human being

Designs never ours to begin with,

forced upon us throughout life

Great expectations for the future,

meet the standards imposed?

Be a success in their eyes…

Fail to meet the great expectations?

In a fast moving society, you’ll be crushed and eaten alive

Consider, consider,

were not all “great men” marginalized and ignored during their prime?

Men and women who made history,

not falling into the expectations imposed onto them

Make a choice,

think for yourself

Perhaps, using your mind for a single time,

break those expectations, those “great expectations”

Shatter the “great expectations” into a thousand pieces,

pieces that can never be put together again

Great expectations?

Life is far too short, let the future be what you decide
