Interned by Remand: Human Rights in Northern Ireland

The on-going political context in the North of Ireland is one of repression in which Republicans are being interned by remand with their licenses being revoked on scapegoat charges of apparent “IRA membership.” A trivial, witch hunt charge that has violated human rights; particularly that of free political association. In the case of Martin Corey, whom was arrested on unspecified charges without trial who was held by the British government for four years after his license was revoked. These tactics remain an integral part of an intimidation campaign against independent Republican activists in the North, particularly of those who have opposed the “Good Friday Agreement.”

Ivor Bell, who was interned during the 1970’s and released on license as per the GFA was more recently arrested as a part “historical inquiries”. Yet again, with withheld ”secret evidence”. While at the same time, there has been no prosecution for the British paratroopers who were responsible for the killings of 11 demonstrators in Ballmurphy in 1971 or of the 14 demonstrators in Derry in 1972. “Historical inquiries” in this case, seems to be a mere politicized move of the British government to again silence the voices of opposition in the North of Ireland. Much like Martin Corey, politically Ivor Bell remained notoriously opposed to Sinn Fein rejection of the policy of absentionism in 1986 and of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.

16 years after the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, the British government are playing an extremely dangerous game in regards to what could be summed up as political show trials against Irish Republicans. One thing is clear, if the British government continue to act recklessly what will continue is the further disillusionment of Irish Nationalists/Republicans as the perception of politicized policing by the PSNI (Former RUC) becomes ever so more apparent.
