A Waltz Between NATO and the Ukrainian Fascists: The New Geopolitics of Ukraine

A brief analysis of the post-putsch geopolitical dynamics of Ukraine and the Crimea:
The situation in the Ukraine has been one of foreign backed mainly Ukrainian nationalists (Fascists) who have usurped the democratically elected government of Ukraine through the tactics of terror, intimidation and violence. In the time leading up to me typing this out, Right Sector (Fascist militia) and other militant groups of the far-right have dominated the streets, threatened ethnic minorities and political opposition; not only threats, but assassinations and violent attacks. The autonomous government of the Crimea, made up of largely ethnic Russians held a democratic referendum to be united with Russia due to the current geopolitical instability and more than likely direct fear of ethnic cleansing from the government in Kiev. In short, this is a break down of the current situation or ‘crisis’ as it has been called.

Geopolitically this has created a foreign backed base composed largely of unelected members of the far-right in Kiev who have now formed what is in all simplicity a military junta. One can consider this a part of inter-imperialist rivalry between the Russian Federation and the United States government and NATO. The Kiev government serves as an outpost for all that is Russophobic, vehemently spitting threats at the now independent Crimea and the Russian Federation. For the most part, this is comparable to Georgia which has been used as a NATO outpost to surround the Russian Federation. The new geopolitical lines effectively make the Crimea, a buffer zone between the Russian Federation as a whole and the highly fascist leaning government in the Ukraine. However, the current question is what will happen to Eastern Ukraine. There is no answer for this question, what could result could be direct violent confrontation between the fascist militants of Right Sector and local inhabitants in Eastern Ukraine who as a whole don’t identify with the junta. Possibly, it could lead the country into civil strife and direct bloody conflict.
